“As co-founder of the largest Donkey Kong website in history, I’d like to think I know a thing or two about what Donkey Kong fans want. I mean, it’s not like I know anything else! I had a very limited education, thanks to neglectful parents and my addiction to Donkey Kong Country. Let me tell you what I know for sure though: K. Rool needs to be in Smash Bros.

K. Rool is a goldmine that Nintendo doesn’t know what they’re sitting on. He has a huge fanbase, is wildly unique and original, and not only deserves his place as Donkey Kong’s main nemesis, but among the pantheon of video game icons in Smash Bros. If Sakurai and Nintendo make K. Rool DLC, DK Vine will pull its promotional weight to make sure it’s the most successful DLC Nintendo will ever offer.”

“Since I was 2 years old, I have been a huge fan of the Donkey Kong series. I spent countless hours of my childhood into exploring and completing classic titles such as Donkey Kong Country (DKC) 2, DKC3, and DK64. What do all of these titles have in common? An amazing villain: King K. Rool. The Kremling King has been a greatly important figure in the DK series, from stealing Donkey Kong’s banana hoard, to kidnapping various members of the Kong family, to threatening to destroy Donkey Kong’s entire way of life by firing his Blast-O-Matic at DK island.

Now, to the point: Smash Bros. is a series where a ton of iconic and beloved characters with completely unorthadox fighting styles compete together in a brawl to end them all. Given this criteria, it would almost be a crime to leave out King K. Rool. Throughout the DKC series, he has demonstrated plenty of potential for fighting through the various personas that he has shown in his boss fights. He has been a pirate captain with a gigantic blunderbuss. He has been a mad scientist with a propeller pack and gadgets. He has even been a boxer who can throw powerful punches. Even in his normal king persona, he is an overweight crocodile, so he has his claws, teeth, crown, and enormous weight to throw around. The moveset practically writes itself, so there is little need for improvising.”

“K. Rool is one of Nintendo’s most interesting villains. While others like Bowser and Ganon have one goal that they try over and over to accomplish, K. Rool’s schemes continue to escalate as he becomes more and more unhinged. He keeps every appearance fresh by taking on new roles to fit his current scheme, making every battle against him interesting and giving him massive moveset potential for Smash. His conspicuous absence in recent years has left countless fans around the world eager to see him again. As the extremely popular, charismatic, and unique main antagonist of one of Nintendo’s biggest, longest-running, and most popular franchises; he would be a perfect choice for Smash.”

“From a personal standpoint, I want K. Rool because I grew up with Donkey Kong. One of my first memories is playing Donkey Kong 64. I loved it. The opening with K. Rool was really cool. Him and his Darth Vader esque voice, treating his minions like dirt. Bowser was cool too, but K. Rool always seemed like a bad guy. When I remember playing Melee, but it was not until Super Smash Brothers Brawl that I started wanting K. Rool. He was a perfect fit. Bowser stealing K. Rool’s banana hoard in Subspace was wrong. It should have been K. Rool doing that. I started to become more active in the Smash speculation scene, and others wanted K. Rool too. If he does not get in, Super Smash Brothers for 3DS/Wii U I fully support the K. Rool for Smash DLC.

From a “why he should be included” standpoint, he is the main antagonist of Donkey Kong Country, is very popular and could be a very unique fighter. He is an excellent choice for Smash Bros. and I hope to see him in it.”

“King K rool has THE POTENTIAL!!! Not to just be a good… character addition, and not to just be another evil guy… to put on the roster, NO!!! He has the MOVESET, he has the CHARACTER (no pun intended), and he has the PERFECT STUFF to be a playable fighter in the Smash Bros series. There is nothing that the devs could NOT think of for his move-set to be!!! No end to his possibilities. He can be a Peg-Legged Royal Scientist named ROCKY for crying out loud!!! This guy means business and if he does get in the game and DLC is not needed, then APPLAUSE for the greatest Smash of all time having 1 of Nintendo’s greatest, if not THE greatest villain in top franchise history.

P.S. Do you know how crazy people would freak if they saw King K. Rool’s shadow appear and the words: CHALLENGER APPROACHING????!!!! appeared… OMG I get tears just thinking about it…”

“Alright, so I’m going to be brutally honest here. I’m by no means a gamer who grew up with Rare. But, Donkey Kong Country 3 for the GBA was the first Nintendo game I ever played. The amount of fun I had beating up Kremlings was amazing. I later became obsessed with Nintendo, and dove into the company’s rich history. What baffles me is how the King is constantly forgotten. The Country series was one of the most popular franchises Nintendo had to offer, and yet, we haven’t seen him since a Mario baseball game.

Smash Bros. is supposed to be a collection of all things Nintendo. And it’s doing a fairly good job at it. But, it’s missing villains. And K. Rool is no ordinary villain. You have Bowser, the bully, Ganondorf, the plotting wizard, Wolf, the mercenary, Dedede, the selfish anti-hero, and barely anybody else besides former villains Wario and Meta Knight. King K Rool is crazy. He does whatever he needs to in order to stop the Kongs. That’s extremely different from what we’ve seen.

His potential is through the roof. King K. Rool’s boss fights lend to a moveset as easily as Mega Man’s did. He has his crown throw from the first game, his blunderbuss (cannonballs, gases and all) from the sequel, his machinery from the third game, his boxing skills from Donkey Kong 64, even the handheld games give him new moves, like a bouncing belly flop from Donkey Kong Land, a roll attack from Jungle Climber, his mech from King of Swing, there’s plenty to choose from! His Final Smash has plenty potential too, from KAOS to the Blast-O-Matic to fake “Kredits” falling, even cannonballs would work!

I realized how much we needed K. Rool when playing Brawl. Bowser stealing the bananas was so… wrong. We saw Mario, Kirby, Link, Samus, Ness and Lucas all get their shining chance to fight their longtime enemies. But DK and Diddy have to settle for Mario’s baddies taking the Kremlings’ places. It feels weird going to play Donkey Kong Country Returns, or Tropical Freeze, only to realize I’m not fighting the Kremlings, I’m fighting wooden planks or arctic creatures. Not the arch-nemesis of my character.

Smash Bros. is the one game K. Rool can finally shine in.”

“Not many potential newcomers have as much moveset potential as K. Rool. I’d struggle to think of any, when you combine the fact that he’s the equivalent of “Bowser” to Mario for the Donkey Kong series (one of Nintendo’s most iconic and successful IPs), I can’t believe he hasn’t been included sooner. At this point in time we should all be here speculating on who our 5th DK rep should be, not our 3rd!”

–TheAnvil

“It’s only recently that I’ve become a supporter of the King. I have no personal attachment to K. Rool, I’ve only seen him from online videos of his boss battles from the classic DKC titles. . .However, that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate him. Donkey Kong, a series with little representation for one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises in Smash Bros, deserves more representation and K. Rool is a perfect candidate for playable status in Smash Bros. His potential to impress is very high and he’s an excellent villain. It’s a no-brainer for him to be playable and if he isn’t in the main game I seriously hope he’s DLC.”

“What can I say? Donkey Kong Country has stayed one my absolutely favourite video game series since I first played it, when I was no more than a little infant, and, consequently, K. Rool has a special place in my childhood memories as this charismatic, tyrannic and persona-changing villain that would always stand on my way to success.

As it has been said countless times, K. Rool’s moveset could bring something new to the table: Aside from having countless options to choose from, he would essentially be a heavyweight character with a lot of ranged attacks at his disposal, something we have yet to see in Smash, all of this without sacrificing his powerful hand-to-hand combat abilities.

I feel like the Donkey Kong series could use some more representation in Smash, and including K. Rool into the roster, after being a clear fan favourite for years, sporting a lot of support from the Smash and DK fanbase, even when his recent apparitions have been few, would be a fantastic way to help give the series of our favourite Nintendo monkey the recognition it needs.”

–Devil G.

“K. Rool is not only an iconic villain that has been unjustly ignored by Nintendo/Retro, but he is the epitome of what a Smash character is. Nintendo roots, quirky/goofy personality, unique fighting style, and unlimited moveset potential.

It would be a travesty to deny his abilities as a playable character in Smash Brothers.”

“KING K. Rool Yes, King K. Rool. I’m all for casual conversation but respect where respect is due. And none is more deserving than the Kremling King. For the longest time I never really had a favourite Nintendo villain. Ganondorf was by-the-books, Bowser while cool was never anything to write home about in the long run. But in recent years I’ve grown to become fond of King K. Rool for his silly name and extravagantly wacky personality.

There’s always something charming about bruisers as bad guys. It’s the stock trope for a villain to larger or comparable to the hero but it’s one that never really died- it was instead embraced and I couldn’t be happier for it. Especially when it’s something as anomalous as the King, who manages to appear overweight yet still can hold his own in a fight. Even if he resorts to dirty tricks to win.

I fear that King K. Rool is- no. He IS ignored as a staple Nintendo villain. There’s so much more potential for him to grow and evolve like Bowser had but he’s not had the chance he needs. With Smash Bros hopes are high. It’s a celebration of Nintendo’s history at it’s core both past and present and King K. Rool has only been so ignored in the physical sense. His presence as trophies in the past 2 games give me high hopes for him to be playable and even if he’s not this time- let me tell you.

I will wait. For as long as it takes to see the King on the battlefield duking it out with Nintendo’s villains and facing off against DK once again. The day has to come. He’s deserves it and I think we do too. Please let this game be the one.”

–bellboy64

“Now, if there is something that concerns me is that King K. Rool doesn’t appear in any games as of late. Retro Studios decided to take the series reboot with a new and fresh villain. Which is ok, because the nature of Donkey Kong games is the Kong family against foreign enemies who threaten their island (and their banana collection).

But when you look back at all the list of villains of Donkey Kong. NONE of them have enough charisma or will stay in the fans minds like King K. Rool. This is because King K. Rool has the most games of course. But also he has the most personality and he feels more on the same level of DK for them to be life rivals, while the other villains looked like an only time appeareance.

Without including another points like Smash Bros. needing more villains or heavyweights. We can conclude that King K. Rool. Would be the best candidate for a DLC character (if he is not in the game already by the time I wrote this). As for moveset and other things like how will he be portrayed. I would prefer his “Kaptain K. Rool” look from Donkey Kong Country 2. This is because Smash Bros. 4 already has some kings in the roster like Dedede and Bowser (king of the koopas). While the “pirate” archetype has not yet been filled. Also, his blunderbuss looks like a great weapon to inspire a moveset. Anyways, there is also to consider that his original look is the most used and the most recognized. And there is the possibility of using alternate costumes to solve this issue.

So yeah, here is the support from one guy from the world. Almost an essay on why I want a character in a videogame. And I could go on even further. If someone of Nintendo or even Masahiro Sakurai himself reads this. I thank you for your interest and encourage you to make King K. Rool as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS a dream come true.”

–Bloo

“One of Nintendo’s strengths is its ability to draw on good memories.

Nintendo: Please draw upon the good memories of the millions of gamers who grew up playing Donkey Kong Country 1-3 and Donkey Kong 64 by adding King K. Rool. As the villain, he was an important part of those games. Many of us remember and cherish his funny expressions, his awesome boss music, and his hilarious disguises. Many of us even got to know him through his appearance on the DKC Cartoon. He’s an important part of our memories when it comes to DK, please bring him back.

Sakurai, please help bring back this character that the fans love. Even if it is as a DLC character, please put him in!”

–NB

“I absolutely adore RARE and their characters. From DK to the King we all know and love, RARE and their games helped me through the roughest years of my life. RARE might not be the same studio it once was, but their spirit lives on through the company that I greatly cherish. That company is Nintendo.

Like Diddy in Brawl, I am supporting King K. Rool to be playable in the next Smash Bros or to appear in any future DK titles. The King would have an amazing, potential moveset that would differ greatly from the rest of the cast. It would be a miss opportunity if Nintendo ignores this fat insane ruler of the Kremlings. Please Sakurai. Don’t screw this up!”

–nathanielvs

“I grew up playing the Donkey Kong Country series. At the time, I was young and inexperienced with gaming in general. I’m not afraid to say that I saw the Game Over screen quite frequently–especially during the battles with K. Rool. The more times I was forced to play through those levels, the more I wanted to play as the guy who continuously beat the heck out of me, and Smash Bros. always seemed like the perfect way to do so.

Once the idea of K. Rool in Smash entered my mind, I began to contemplate all of the possibilities. After years of thinking about it, I don’t think I’ve even scratched the surface of what K. Rool could do in a Smash title. He’s got his crown, blunderbuss, helibackpack, minions, inventions, and a whole lot more that could make him such an interesting character. Many of his fans have come up with interesting move sets that sound really cool.

Speaking of his fans, there are a lot of them. K. Rool is well loved across the internet, and his inclusion as DLC would surely make a lot of people happy and generate good press. Here’s hoping that you at least take him into consideration while designing DLC for the upcoming titles.”

Even though the King has been left out of the previous two hits in the Donkey Kong series, he still has plenty of senority, having appeared as the main antagonist in six of the games in the series and made other appearances in a few more. Because of this, many consider King K. Rool to be a Nintendo All-Star. Smash is a game about Nintendo’s All-Stars, so King K. Rool is a perfect candidate for DLC because of his importance and unique moveset potential. That’s all I have to say on the subject. Thank you for your time.

  4. I personally, would LOVE to see this happen, BUT not as DLC. I want King K. RoOl to get the acknowledgement he deserves and just be in Super Smash Bros Wii U/3DS !!! I would be truly…upset if this enormously potential-filled character did NOT make it in. DLC would be my first, next, and ONLY thought!!! I played Mario games WAY before I ever touched DK Country, but when I layed my eyes on the original DK Country for SNES, it blew my mind how the game looked. The art style was slightly paint brush oriented. I loved it!!! It took me from at least age 6 to age 12 to finally get to the last level of DK Country and when I did, I saw HIM… This very obscure, crazy-looking, maniacal figure, who seemed to resemble a reptile. This character that I was just now making it to, had a very strange aura, if you will, about him. He looked like nothing I had ever seen before. I had seen Bowser and even Pig Ganon, but this guy was just straight up KOOL. One bloodshot eye, a glimmering gold armored breastplate and crown, ruby red cape and the SCALIEST green skin. When you fight him on the Gangplank Galleon, he is dressed up as a king and I immediately wondered why? After playing DKC2 and then 3 it all made sense. This Krocodile was INSANE!!! He was a pirate in DKC2 in a Laboratory, WHAT???, followed by a Mad Scientist in DKC3 who dwelled in what looked like a Creepy Castle… There is seriously something wrong with this character I kept thinking, but I LOVED IT…the personality switching, the extreme insanity, the wild facial expressions during battle always kept me on my toes AND heels trying to wonder what this guy would do next in a serious AND laughing matter. King K RoOl is even a boxer in DK64, which is my #2 favorite N64 game of ALL TIME!!! (right under Super Smash 64 🙂 I just love his personality, the vibes he gives off and the things that he tries to get away with. There are 3 things that the new Smash Wii U/3DS needs and they are the following: 1. Villains- All we have is Bowser right now as a truly evil villain, but even sometimes Bowser is soft, and if we count King DDD he is a laughable villain in the sense that the way he acts seems completely legit towards his nemesis Kirby, so King K is much needed for the derived plot-making, maniacal costume changing, and evil loony charm that he gives off with that ol’ eye tic of his. #2. This new Smash Bros seriously needs more heavyweights…JUST LIKE BOWSER and usually these heavyweights are villains…now correct me if I am wrong, but King K especially fits #1 and #2 now, He is twice the size of DK in the DKC games so I am sure the devs could do extraordinary things with his girth. And finally #3. King K rool has THE POTENTIAL!!! To sum it all up this character would be more than a KOOL addition. He would be an INSANELY KOOL 1!!!!! Thank You for everyone allowing such greatness to be bestowed upon our King.

P.S. Do you know how crazy people would freak if they saw King K. RoOls shadow appear and the words: CHALLENGER APPROACHING????!!!! appeared… OMG I get tears just thinking about it…

Sakurai, please help bring back this character that the fans love. Even if it is as a DLC character, please put him in!

I absolutely adore RARE and their characters.

Don’t screw this up!

I grew up playing the Donkey Kong Country series.

Here’s hoping that you at least take him into consideration while designing DLC for the upcoming titles.

  15. Hyle Russell says:

As co-founder of the largest Donkey Kong website in history, I’d like to think I know a thing or two about what Donkey Kong fans want.

Rool DLC, DK Vine will pull its promotional weight to make sure it’s the most successful DLC Nintendo will ever offer.

  16. Opossum says:

Well, it’s come to this. Should King K. Rool not be in the initial roster, I wholeheartedly support him for DLC. This is a character that is well loved by many for his zany personality shifts, vicious demeanor, and slew of moves for combat potential. For a series as integral to Nintendo as Donkey Kong to not have its main villain (and one of Nintendo’s most uniquely-crafted villains at that) playable in Nintendo’s all-star fighting game’s fourth iteration would be an absolute travesty. The King has legions of devoted fans worldwide awaiting his appearance. His public absence lately has generated quite the outcry.

If spark was meant to be created, and joyous applause was meant to be achieved, then King K. Rool’s inclusion as nothing less than a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS must become a reality.

  17. Krazy Kopter says:

When you actually look at Nintendo’s roster of villains, hardly any of them beyond Bowser (and to a lesser extent Dedede and Ganon) become the heroes’ archnemesis outside of one or two games. They are often replaced with a new set of baddies, who themselves are usually gone by the next game, and thus are doomed to obscurity outside of a handful of fans.

King K. Rool was the exception. Thanks to the dedication of Rare and later PAON it is quite clear that he and the Kremlings as a whole are the biggest threat to the Kongs. At first, K. Rool merely plotted to steal the Kongs’ Banana Hoard, but as the series progressed his goal expanded into attempted genocide against the entire Kong family with no regards to the safety of his own minions. His tendency to switch between motifs and enforcing it on the rest of the Kremlings also made each encounter with him refreshing and prevented him from becoming a stale villain.]

However, despite doing a stellar job on both Returns and Tropical Freeze, Retro has no love for the Kremling King or his Krew and replaced them with the Tiki Tak Tribe and Snowmads respectively, even though the Snowmad leader is a copycat of K. Rool. Thus Donkey Kong is reduced to the same staus as most Nintendo series by no longer having a reoccurring threat.

If there’s anyplace for K. Rool and the Kremlings to get back into the spot, it’s Super Smash Bros. The Kremlings (specifically the Kritters) are already enemies in the 3DS version’s Smash Run, and although K. Rool being in an any form beyond a trophy would be nice, having him as a playable character would be ace!

Since the chances of Dark Pit and Chorus Kid as default characters are seemingly more likely at this point, we can only hope that there’s enough demand for DLC so that K. Rool can get a second chance to cause havoc on the likes of Mario, Samus, Pac-Man and Palutena. We need the Kremling Krew to rise again, and having K. Rool as DLC might be our last chance to revitalize them.

  18. Xaveir says:

His been requested badly, and he deserves the spot more then Ridley, (Too big) Geno, (Nintendo don’t own that character and has only existed in one game) Dixie (It would just be another 3rd Monkey on the roster, also She would probably just be another clone of Diddy and that would aggravate me a lot) we only have one villain in Smash 3DS/Wii U which is Bowser, and King K. Rool would be the perfect newcomer to add up the villain roster.

  19. Thelimomon says:

King K. Rool and you guys have my full support. I love the Donkey Kong franchise, I love nearly every Donkey Kong character and I especially love King K. Rool. While I still think he should return in a Donkey Kong game I also think he should be a playable character in Smash Bros. because he was never forgotten and still has a unbeliveable big *insert Ridley joke here* fanbase. But one of the biggest reasons I want him in Smash is that he would be a heavyweight and very powerful character. In this installment we got NO new heavyweight/powerful character and I’m really upset about this because I LOVE the these characters. Bowser, King Dedede, Donkey Kong, Charizard, Ganondorf… The amount of villains is also still pretty weak, this time around we got and lost one villain, so the number of villains is still the same while the number of female characters is three times as big as it was in Brawl! This about the villains is in my opinion really sad, because the villains are as much important as the heros… Without villains, we wouldn’t even need heroes, so were is the “love” for the villains?

  20. J.A.S. says:

My interest in King K. Rool first began when I was a kid, watching my dad play through Donkey Kong Country. I soon followed, making it to the final boss, and even falling for the fake kredits sequence! But my all-time favorite role of him has to be from Donkey Kong Country 2. You fight him not once, but twice, and on both occasions he offers something different, keeping me on the edge of my seat. Easily my favorite final boss battles of any game. Spanning a number of DK games, K. Rool has enough diversity to offer the Smash Bros. universe tenfold. And, like the upcoming Mewtwo, I would be absolutely thrilled to see him appear as DLC, to now become the boss I’d so loved to fight against as a child.

  21. Let’s face it, King K. Rool deserves to be put on the roster as a newcomer more than anyone. Not only is he one of Nintendo’s most recognizable villains but also one of it’s most memorable. I remember playing Donkey Kong 64 as a kid and I immediately fell in love with the characters, yes, unfortantley I never played the original Donkey Kong Country Trilogy for Super Nintendo simply because I did’nt own one but I did know about them and am glad I’ve finally gotten around to playing them as well. Anyway, King K. Rool was my favorite character in the game, the way they made him all evil and disturbing was brilliant, I even like the deep sinister voice they gave him from Kevin Bayliss. His determination to destroy the Kongs no matter what is part of what makes him a great villain as well as his many different gimmicks for his types of battles throughout the series.

    K. Rool has all the moveset potential you need just add and mix them up with him and you’ve got a great heavy smasher, even his pirate, mad scientist, and boxer gimmicks could be used as alternate costumes.

I’m pretty sure many Nintendo and Donkey Kong fans would be very happy if they’re favorite Kremling King were to finally be added to the Super Smash Bros. 3-DS/Wii U Roster as DLC, heck, I’d buy him in a heart beat.

  22. billy says:

    K. Rool has been my most wanted character since Melee…I’ve been disappointed 3 times now. Cut me a bone Nintendo, throw us some DLC

  23. Gordon Freeman says:

I never figured out why in hells name is Retro Studios trying to do away with K. Rool? That’s like trying to take bowser out of mario or king dedede out of kirby. It’s just NOT RIGHT. When I first got DK returns, I wanted to relive the childhood I never had, and It’s just incomplete without King K Rool. who really gives a damn about random Tiki heads and Nordic furballs. WE WANT KING K ROOL!!! He was In my view on of the most unique Nintendo Villains, because (correct me if Im wrong) but wasn’t he the one villain to never try the same scheme twice? His personality in the show (corny as it may have been) was hilarious and he is one of my favorite video game characters ever. As for Smash, it would be a great way to bring him out of the dark. Sakurai did say that sometimes characters with no future are picked (hence, Duck Hunt)and as of right now, RetroStudios seems to be aiming to make sure the old Kremling King has none. We must Rally, if he makes it into smash, this will be his finest hour!

  24. Gordon Freeman says:

I have an announcement guys. King K Rool’s name has been trademarked on an upcoming Donkey Kong Jungle Climber. what could this mean? will we get him in smash. It’s about time he comes back!
